The 1U congregation elects its Board of Trustees to serve as its governing body and focus on the long-term mission and wellbeing of the congregation. 

Governance is the board’s work, to be accomplished not in isolation but in holy conversation and shared ministry among the board members, clergy, staff, and congregation. 

The board defines long-term vision and strategic goals for the congregation, guided by the aspirations in our Mission, Core Values, and Unitarian Universalist Principles. The board delegates responsibility for implementing the goals to the minister, acting as chief of staff, who oversees the tasks performed by the staff. The board provides guidance and limitations on 1U operations through adopted governance policies, and it is responsible for continual monitoring and evaluation of the health of the congregation and progress on the goals and governance procedures.

The 1U Board includes nine trustees. The 1U minister and immediate past president of the board serve as ex-officio members.

The Board holds its regular monthly meetings on the third Monday of each month. Guests are always welcome to observe Board Meetings except for rare occasions when, to protect privacy of staff or volunteers, the Board goes into Executive Session. Guests who wish to speak during a meeting are advised to make arrangements with the President in advance.

The Executive Committee is a subset of the Board and includes the President, President-Elect, Treasurer, Secretary, Past President, and Minister. It meets on the second Monday of the month to set the agenda for the Board meeting a week later. Members who have items for the agenda should email them to the President or Secretary before the Executive Committee meeting.

Each spring, the Nominating Committee presents to the congregation a slate of candidates to be considered for vacant  Board and Nominating Committee seats. The elected leaders are chosen by a vote of the congregation members.
