Covenant Groups

Covenant Groups

A covenant group is a small relational group that meets once per month. It provides opportunities for group members to build strong relationships with each other and with the larger Beloved Community at First Unitarian. Group members are encouraged to talk, learn, work, and play together over time.

In a covenant group, people experience a relational individuality which affirms the inherent worth and dignity of every person. People experience themselves and each other as part of the interdependent web of existence of which we are all a part. Together, people establish communities which embody the values of justice, democracy and human dignity. Each person is treated equitably. Each has a voice and is heard. And each person is respected for his or her own intrinsic humanity.

The defining purpose of a covenant group is to bring people into right relationship with each other and with the larger world. Participating in a covenant group is a great way to meet and get to know others within the community and a great environment to deepen one’s spirituality.

What Is a Covenant Group?

A Covenant Group is a group of 8-10 1U members who agree to meet once a month for a year. Each gathering is 90 minutes long and is facilitated by one or two "Anchors." Sessions have a simple format that includes an opening with a check in, a time for exploration and discussion, and a closing. The theme for the time of exploration and discussion is provided by Rev. Kathy and chosen to help the group members get to know themselves and each other more deeply. Topics typically relate to congregational themes, world events, or the seasons.

Water Covenant Group

The P in LEAP - Yes it stands for Protect the environment. The Green Team and Covenant Groups will be putting on a joint, short-term covenant group from March through June to discuss the issue of Water. Water is vital to our survival as a species. It seems plentiful, but there are forces that are polluting our water and others that are looking to control the use and distribution of water. Do we have the right to clean water? What does our religious faith speak to us about these issues?

Covenant Group Corner

Veterans Day

When I realized that our Drop-in Covenant Group meeting fell on Veterans Day, I just felt impelled to choose it as our topic for sharing this month. Although my Grandfather (WWI), Father (Korean War), and my Uncle (Vietnam) are veterans, I never felt as strongly about this holiday as much as I do now that my son is in the Army. If you yourself are a veteran, have or had a member of your family who is a veteran, or if you would just like to honor and share your thoughts on veterans, please join us.
