Ministerial Settlement Committee

The 2010-2011 Ministerial Settlement Team (members of which may appear familiar to you as last year’s Ministerial Search Committee) are now meeting regularly.  Its goal is to help the congregation and Rev. Kathy Schmitz bridge the changes that will occur during the transition from interim ministry to a called settled minister.  Among its tasks are the following:

  1.  Providing Rev. Kathy with history and context regarding issues that may be presented to her.
  2. Being process observers and advising Rev. Kathy about the health of the congregation.
  3. Reviewing existing church by-laws, exploring new options, and making recommendations to the congregation regarding the form and role of a future “Committee on Ministry.”

Save the date! The new minister installation ceremony and reception are scheduled for Oct 17, 2010!

Welcome Rev. Kathy!

 Welcome Rev. Kathy!

Rev. Kathy Schmitz First Unitarian Church of OrlandoGet ready! The wait is almost over. Following a rousing vote to call Rev. Kathy Schmitz in May, Rev. Kathy begins her ministry at First Unitarian on August 15, 2010. As she leads worship for the first time as our settled minister on Sunday, August 22, Rev. Kathy considers the challenges of ensuring that our time and energy, as well as our passion and commitment, are going to the things that matter most.

A “decommissioned” Ministerial Search Committee has been replaced by a Settlement Team, working with Rev. Kathy to assure a smooth transition into congregational life. We hope all will join us at a festive potluck luncheon on Sunday, August 22 following Rev. Kathy’s first service, to welcome her and Charlie into our congregation. Details about the role of the Settlement Team are developing. Stay tuned! Contact: Kathy Homblette at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Rev. Kathy Schmitz Accepts Call!

Rev. Kathy Schmitz Accepts the Call!

The only item on the May 2 ballot for the congregation: accepting the recommendation of the Ministerial Search Committee to call Rev. Kathy Schmitz as our next settled minister. Voting members exceeded the quorum required by church bylaws, as 145 of its 217 members cast their ballots.  Rev. Kathy received a unanimously positive vote, and has accepted the congregation’s call to become its next settled minister. Rev. Kathy will begin her ministry in Orlando on August 15.

The Ministerial Search Committee once again thanks everyone for their full support. Candidating Week was a busy and productive time. Rev. Kathy learned lots about our church programs and members, which will be valuable as she prepares to begin her ministry with us.

Candidating Week! Apr 25 - May 2

Candidating Week!

Candidating week with Rev. Kathy Schmitz runs April 25 - May 2. Congregational leaders and members will have the opportunity to meet Rev. Kathy at various activities. Fellowship events are planned throughout the week. Rev. Kathy preaches Sunday April 26 and May 2.

The Ministerial Search Committee unanimously recommends Reverend Kathryn (Kathy) Schmitz to be called as Minister of the First Unitarian Church of Orlando. The congregation will vote on this important topic following the service on Sunday, May 2.

Updates from the Ministerial Search Committee

As we near the most exciting time in the search process, it is important that we all understand the next steps as clearly as possible. The Search Committee will have concluded all precandidating weekends by the end of February. The first date that an offer may be made to a candidate is March 15, 2010. However, this does not mean the committee is permitted to announce the identity of the candidate to the congregation at that time. Once the offer has been made, a criminal background check must be performed, the minister and the negotiating team must discuss and settle on a ministry agreement, and the President and Minister must sign the agreement. Only after these steps are complete can the identity of the candidate be announced to the congregation.
