Have you emailed your Florida friends and family?  Here's a sample script that you can copy:

I wanted to let you know about an effort to take benefits away from Florida families.

It's called the Marriage "Protection" Amendment, but it doesn't protect anything. In fact it blocks health benefits and legal protections from all unmarried Floridians. It is especially hard on seniors and municipal employees like police and firefighters many of whom rely on domestic partnership protections that are threatened by this amendment.

Please Vote NO on Amendment 2

Resolution of the Congregation of the First Unitarian Church of Orlando:

Because: Unitarian Universalists affirm and promote the inherent worth and dignity of every person; seek justice, equity and compassion in human relations and pursue a goal of world community with peace liberty and justice for all;

Whereas: The Unitarian Universalist Association [UUA], and its member congregations have repeatedly affirmed their commitment to justice, equality, compassion and civil marriage for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people; and

Whereas: The UUA at its 2008 General Assembly adopted an Action of Immediate Witness opposing all laws limiting all persons to the rights and benefits of marriage, and

Whereas,: The proposed Florida Marriage Protection Amendment, which states, “Inasmuch as marriage is a legal union of only one man and one woman as husband and wife, no other legal union that is treated as marriage or the substantial equivalent thereof shall be valid or recognized,” (emphasis added) will appear on the November 4, 2008 ballot as Amendment 2, and

Whereas: The amendment will negatively affect straight and gay couples in committed relationships outside of marriage; and

Whereas, Florida law already prohibits gay marriage, but the language of Amendment 2 goes much farther in denying rights, benefits, health and family protection to others, especially unmarried seniors,

Therefore, be it resolved:  The First Unitarian Church of Orlando

  1. Urges its members to seek education on the issue of the proposed Amendment 2;

  2. Urges its members to oppose and to vote NO on Amendment 2 and further

  3. Urges its members to be active in the community by spreading the word, contacting family and friends and educating them on this issue and encouraging them to vote NO on 2 in the November election.

Resolution adopted this 12th day of October 2008 at Orlando, Florida.
