Worship Services - October 2008

Join us this month for our liberal and diverse programming including the observation of the holiest days of the Jewish yearly cycle of observations: The Days of Awe, from Rosh Ha-Shanah to Yom Kippur which offer a chance to contemplate our past, wonder about our future, tremble at the mystery of life, make things right, and make or renew commitments.

Sunday, October 5 | Repent! – Rev. Dr. F. Jay Deacon
Every year, Yom Kippur comes asking hard questions. Could there be a world without guilt? Should there be? There’s only one “Supreme Critic” capable of calling you to turn, and it’s closer than your breath.

Sunday, October 12 | Context / A Higher “We” – Rev. Dr. F. Jay Deacon
This is what a spiritual community is, and what a congregation can be: a context for the unfolding of our highest possibilities, an engine that actually creates a new and nobler culture. But it may not be for everyone. It will have to be something more than a collection of egos.

Service includes rite of receiving new members.

Sunday, October 19 | Our Young Adults

The Young Adults in our Beloved Unitarian Universalist community are vibrant, diverse, and interesting.  Come hear as several of them share their spiritual journeys, gifts, and insights with us.  Guided by Christine Haskins, Worship Co-Chair.  Also, it's Share the Plate Sunday!  This month our selected recipient is the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee.

Sunday, October 26 | Church & State & Faith-Based Hate – Rev. Dr. F. Jay Deacon
Here's a funny thing about religion - at least, when it holds onto the authority of the most archaic, even barbaric, elements from past ages. It speaks of love, while it kindles hate - in the name of God. And what happens when church marries state? In light of Amendment 2, time for some frank words.
(The sermon originally scheduled for today, "Edge," has been rescheduled for Nov. 9)
