THE ALLIANCE. . . . . . which has been in existence since the mid 1920’s is the group that has met most continuously throughout the life of this congregation. In its early years, it was a gathering place for the women to join together for tea and to hear a speaker of note. Perhaps one of the members would give a talk on ‘Appreciating Classical Music’ or on an artist, or perhaps would give a book review. Yet through the years the group maintained a strong interest in helping those in need. In the early days, a small fee was charged at gatherings, or perhaps a few items handmade by members were sold to members of the congregation. These amounts were sent to the national offices of the Unitarian Association, used toward a scholarship for a local student or were distributed directly in the community. It is clear, given this past, to see how the current activities of the Alliance, which counts among its membership members of both local Unitarian Universalist congregations, are still consistent with the intent of the original group. Its CONTINUING BAZAAR sells items donated by Unitarians of Orlando and is open in Gore Hall every Sunday after worship service. Proceeds from the Bazaar go to local agencies whose work is in harmony with UU Principles. The Alliance meets each Tuesday from 10:00 until 1:00 in Gore Hall. Activities include Bazaar sorting and pricing, sandwich making for the homeless, speakers of interest, planned events and business meetings. New members and guests are always welcome. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
