Social Outreach

Social Justice and Outreach

The First Unitarian Social Justice Committee holds monthly meetings to discuss a range of social justice, outreach, and environmental subjects. We meet in the Hiett Library an the third Tuesday evening of each month from 7 to 9 pm throughout the church year (September through May). The first hour of each meeting is devoted to a predetermined subject.  Meetings last year (2007-2008) examined the Crisis in Darfur, Florida's death penalty, Family Equality and the proposed Anti-marriage Amendment, civil disobedience, and the work of ACORN. In the second hour members are invited to bring their own Social Justice interests and concerns and to make short presentations to the group. All church members are invited to attend and participate in this ongoing program.

Social Outreach Program

Social Justice Tuesdays

As Unitarian Universalists we have come together as a community to stand up for our Seven Principles. We regularly worship together, break bread together and share each others' joys and concerns. But what else can we do or should we be doing as a congregation? Last year (2007) our Committee on Ministry posed this question in a series of inquiries and focus groups. The answer was not a surprise. Social Justice and Social Outreach were the strongest and most common responses. The immediate reaction of the Social Justice Committee was to organize an ongoing, monthly meeting with a program based on a particular SJ subject or theme. Calling the program "SJ Tuesdays", the meetings are held on the third Tuesday evening of each month at 7 pm in the Hiett Library. Everyone who attends becomes a "de facto" member of the SJ Committee and receives notice of future programs. Time is set aside for members to advocate and discuss their own SJ project or interest. Guests from the larger community are often invited to present and share their activities that are consistent with UU Principles. All are welcome.
